PROCESS
- To start I decided to use the same method as I did for the Coil cup.
- I took a piece of clay and flattened it out using the slab roller.
- Using a sponge and rib I smoothed by slab down.
- Once it was flat I took a spray bottle and used a knife to cut out a circle.
- After I made my base I began making coils and smoothing them down on both sides .
- I performed step five multiple times and changed the size of my coils to alter the size of my piece every so often.
- To make the eyes I started with a small round ball of clay then cut it in half. I slipped and scored it onto the upper half of my monster.
- To make the pupil I made an even smaller ball of clay cut it in half and then slipped and scored it onto the first piece of the eye.
- I then took a rubber tool and poked a circular indent into the pupil.
- I repeated steps 7,8, and 9 until I reached the desired number of eyes.
- After I made two fat coils that came to a thin point to be the tentacle like arms. To attach the arms I slipped and scored them onto my monster.
- For the mouth I made donut shaped lips using a coil then slipped and scored it on.
- By cutting up a fat coil I created a split tongue. As usual I slipped and scored the tongue between the lips.
- Finally a needle tool is what I used to texture out the entire body of my monster tentacles and all.
INSPIRATION
In my ceramics class we studied James DeRosso's work and this is one of his pieces. This monster is not just a sculpture it has a use and I want my monster to have a use as well. Going into this I had a lot of specific ideas and oppionons on how I wanted my monster to look. After studying DeRosso I still have my opinions but, he definitely influenced me to further push my ideas.

FINAL PRODUCT
I am quite pleased with the final product of my monster. The white you see on the split tongue is glue because the tongue broke in the kiln. The cactus on it's head is a very nice substitute for hair and the texture of my monster adds an exquisite touch. When it comes to the multiple eyes I an going to paint over the smaller eyes that have gotten kind of dingy but other than that this monster was a huge success.
